Carrier Refrigeration Operation Czech Republic Receives Prestigious Environment, Health & Safety Award

BEROUN, Czech Republic, Dec. 10, 2010 – Carrier Refrigeration Operation Czech Republic s.r.o. received a prestigious award, The Health Promoting Enterprise 2010, which is granted annually by the Ministry of Health, Czech Republic. This award certifies a high level of prevention and health and safety measures provided by the company and may be only given to companies meeting very high demands in the area of health and safety in the workplace. Carrier Corp., a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX), is the world’s leader in high technology heating, air- conditioning and refrigeration solutions, improving the world around us through engineered innovation and environmental stewardship.
Over the past six years, the Ministry of Health in the Czech Republic has held the national competition for the title of Health Promoting Enterprise. Carrier Commercial Refrigeration’s manufacturing facilities in Beroun and Myto enrolled last year. As part of the evaluation, both plants were audited by the National Institute of Public Health to verify that the care of employees’ health is an integral part of the business strategy. The results of the strict audit have shown that Carrier Refrigeration Operation CZ has not only fulfilled all the criteria set out by the law, but also highly exceeded the standards in the Czech Republic.
The award ceremony took place in Kaiserstein Palace in Prague under the auspices of the Minister of Health, Doc. MU, Dr. Leos Heger, CSc. and the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, Dr. Ing. Jaromir Drabek. The representatives of Carrier Refrigeration Operation CZ, Jaroslav Hrubes, managing director, and David Kubat, EH&S manager, received the award from the General Surgeon of the Czech Republic, Michael Vit, Ph.D., in the presence of representatives of the Government Office of Labour Inspection, the National Institute of Public Health and the Regional Hygiene Station.
The award, acknowledged primarily in the industrial sector, is a great achievement for the company. David Kubat, EH&S manager stated, "I'm very proud of this award, because it clearly demonstrates the continued effort and great potential of both the plants. It also represents a commitment of the leadership team that it will set standards and continue to improve the level of health and safety measures in both plants. My great thanks to all employees whose effort contributed to this extraordinary success."

Carrier and Earth Day

Today, we join millions around the world in the celebration of Earth Day. While this day is an official designation, as citizens of the earth, we should regard every day as if it were Earth Day. The earth has finite resources and safeguarding those resources is critical for our children and the generations that follow.

Responsibility to the environment

100 year anniversary of the Beroun plant

The company celebrates three important anniversaries this year: 100 years of Beroun plant´s history, 70 years of refrigeration units production and five years as a part of Carrier, a United Technologies Company.
In June 1909 Jan Strchler bought a plot of land for his future spinning-factory on the site of the present plant. In 1939, the production of Tatra trade refrigeration equipment was concentrated in Beroun. Production of refrigeration equipment continued even after incorporation into the national enterprise Frigera Kolín in 1949.
Radical modernization and production of refrigerated chilled and frozen food display cabinets started after the company was privatized by the leading German commercial refrigeration company Linde AG. Five years ago, in 2004, former Linde Frigera became part of Carrier, a group of companies belonging to United Technologies, a U.S. Corporation.
First CO2 application in the Czech Republic

Albert in Jesenice is the first supermarket in the Czech Republic which uses the CO2 deep-freeze system instead of standard HFC refrigerants.
The refrigerated and frozen food cabinets were produced mainly in Carrier plants Beroun and Myto and installed by CARRIER chladicí technika CZ s.r.o.
One of the advantages of CO2 deep-freeze units is the prevention of ozone damaging effects, while at the same time reducing the greenhouse effect caused by refrigeration systems. In the meantime, a number of tens of supermarkets in Europe are using the innovative technologies of CO2 deep-freeze systems.
Christmas party

The Beroun and Myto management organized a Christmas party to thank all employees for their hard work and great results in 2008. In Myto, employees won valuable presents in tombola and enjoyed a rich buffet prepared by the local Sladovna restaurant. In Beroun, a 60s style party took place in the hotel Na Ostrově. At the same time employees could compete in "ice games" on the adjacent winter stadium. We hope that employees of both plants enjoyed the Christmas parties and we are all looking forward to next events.

Visit of US ambassador

On September 22, the US ambassador Richard Graber, accompanied by the Beroun´s city mayor, visited the Beroun plant. After a short presentation about Carrier Corporation, Jaroslav Hrubeš, the managing director, showed Mr. Graber round the factory. During the visit he introduced him the whole manufacturing process as well as the products of our plant.
Beroun plant has succeeded in safety audit

During the last week in July, the safety system in the Beroun plant was crossed-checked by an important EH&S (Environmental Health & Safety) audit. The audit´s main target was to examine if the plant is safe for its employees, for its suppliers, and clients as well as if the EH&S system complies with the Czech and European legislation. A great result 84 points, which the Beroun plant has achieved, ranks it among the safest plants in Carrier Corporation.
