The Beroun plant
Modern history of the Beroun plant
The ownership entrance of Linde AG, which became the 100% owner of the whole plant, can be regarded as the beginning of the modern history of the Beroun plant. Over the more than ten years of ownership by this concern, significant modernisation has been undertaken both in terms of the appearance of the plant and in its equipment with modern technology. Shortly after the plan was taken on, significant reconstruction was implemented, which in the first phase concerned one production hall with assembly lines and a storage facility for purchased parts.
A packed year: 1998
From this point of view, 1998 was packed with “events“. First of all, there was an extensive fire in the warehouse, which caused damage at the level of 160 million Crowns. Thanks to the great commitment of all employees, it was possible to handle this critical situation quickly and to once again open production in full. In the autumn of this year, the whole administration department then moved to a new building, the old building was completely demolished and preparation work was begun on the site for construction of another production hall.
More construction work
Next in line was construction of the hall, where the metalwork plant is now located. Later on, construction was begun on establishment of the new storage facility for purchased parts. This was constructed in two phases, the last of which ended in 2004. We could say that this year was the final one for extensive construction work.
New owner – The Carrier Corporation
As has already been mentioned, new and modern technology also came to Beroun, above all for plastic foam work and treatment of sheet metal. Moving and modernisation of the whole paint shop was also undertaken. The arrival of a new owner, the American Carrier Corperation, then marked a literal revolution in the appearance, size, location and equipment of individual workplaces. Over the course of one year, the inside of the plant change beyond recognition. The quality of the working environment was improved in a fundamental manner and all steps were taken leading towards all workers being able to move around in and work in an environment where they really do feel well - in a clean, spacious, well-arranged and above all safe environment.
Development and decrease of energy demands
The production programme of course also changed over the course of these years. In the beginning this mainly concerned refrigerator and freezer furnishings, the common denominator of which was the built-in generating unit, i.e. its own power (the so-called Compact Line). Measured from today’s point of view, this concerned types, which had energy consumption on the level of a panel-built tenement block. This is of course an exaggeration, but lowering the energy demands placed by refrigerator and freezer furnishings has progressed until the present day in really big strides as has all of their consequences for the environment.
Movement of production
At the turn of the century, movement began of part of production from the German plants. This involved types (the so-called Modular Line) intended for larger shops (supermarkets, hypermarkets and similar), which no longer had their own built-in power. They were powered by units located in these shops. A fundamental event occurred for the production range in 2005, during the course of which complete shift of furnishing production from the Compact Line took place to the production plant in the Hungarian city of Jászárokszállási.
Present
So at present the Beroun plant produces refrigeration and freezer furnishings from the Modular Line on six assembly lines.
As far as space is concerned, the Beroun plant has reached its maximum limit and is restricted on all sides by surrounding developments. For this reason, ever-larger changes are taking place behind its “walls”. Changes, which are intended to bring the Beroun plant and the company as a whole to the very pinnacle in Europe and the world where the controlling company most certainly belongs.
